Why Traditions Matter
There’s something magical about fall in Ohio. The air gets crisp, the trees put on their fiery show, and weekends start to fill with cozy rituals that mark the season. 🍂
Traditions don’t have to be big or expensive, they just have to be yours. The beauty is in the rhythm, the way they root us as families and make ordinary weekends unforgettable. Here are some of my favorite fall traditions (and a few of the best spots in and around Columbus to enjoy them).
🍎 Apple Picking at Local Orchards
There’s nothing like filling up a wagon with apples while little ones sneak bites along the way. Sticky fingers, proud “perfect apple” finds, and a fridge full of crisp sweetness to turn into pies or cider later.
Two of my favorite local orchards are:
(Pataskala): Famous for their rows of apple trees, pumpkin patch, and giant corn maze.
(Utica): A quieter spot known for peaches in summer but just as lovely for apples and pumpkins in fall.
🎃 Pumpkin Patch Adventures
Pumpkin patches are basically childhood joy in one place: climbing hay bales, finding the biggest pumpkin in the field, and proudly dragging it home.
Local favorites include:
(Ostrander): Pumpkins + farm fun galore, hayrides, ziplines, barnyard animals.
(Grove City): Classic pumpkin patch plus fresh cider and warm donuts (yes, please!).
🌽 Get Lost in a Corn Maze
Corn mazes are pure fall adventure, kids running ahead, parents trying to keep up, and laughter echoing through the stalks.
Local favorites include:
(Pataskala): Has one of central Ohio’s best mazes, with new designs every year.
(Ostrander): Also offers a smaller maze and tons of kid-friendly activities.
🥾 Hiking the Trails
Fall is the perfect season to lace up boots and explore the trails. The crunch of leaves underfoot and the glow of golden trees make even a simple walk magical.

🍎 Cozy Nights In
Not all traditions need a car ride. Some of my favorites happen at home: a Halloween movie marathon, mugs of hot apple cider, kids piled under blankets. These are the small things your kids will remember, the smell of popcorn, the glow of the TV, the warmth of being together.
📸 Fall Family Photos
Of course, I can’t forget this one, fall family photos. 🍁 Whether it’s a mini session in a golden field or a full evening spent exploring a park, photos become the memory you hold onto long after the season passes. They’re a way to freeze the chaos and joy of right now.
And yes, that makes photos a tradition too. One that grows more valuable each year.
Fall traditions don’t have to be elaborate. Sometimes it’s as simple as lighting a pumpkin spice candle, taking a family walk after dinner, or snapping a photo in front of your favorite tree.
