Let’s be honest, picking outfits for family photos can feel like a second job. Between school drop-offs, snack refills, and laundry piles, curating picture-perfect looks might not be top of your list.


But here’s the good news: it doesn’t have to be stressful. You don’t need a Pinterest-worthy wardrobe overhaul. You just need a few simple tips that will help your family look pulled together, without feeling overdone.

Start with a Color Palette


Instead of matching everyone in the exact same color, think in terms of coordinating shades. Choose 3–4 colors that complement each other, mixing in a balance of neutrals (creams, tans, soft grays) with one or two pops of color (sage green, rust, dusty blue, blush).


💡 Pro tip: If you’re struggling to choose colors, start with one outfit you love (usually mom’s!) and build everyone else’s outfits around it.

I always tell mamas: choose your outfit first. If you feel beautiful and comfortable, it will set the tone for the whole session.

  • A flowy maxi dress for movement and softness.
  • A jumpsuit or romper for playful, modern vibes.
  • Jeans and a textured sweater for cozy fall sessions.
  • Linen or cotton midi dress for warm-weather ease.


Think about movement, twirls, walking, sitting, snuggling. Choose fabrics that let you move without fussing.

Texture and Layers Make the Magic


Textures photograph beautifully and add instant interest to your gallery. Think knits, linen, gauze, corduroy, lace, or soft denim. Layers like cardigans, vests, or scarves add depth and variety without a complete outfit change.

 

Coordinating Without Going Matchy-Matchy


The goal is harmony, not uniformity. You want outfits to feel like they belong together without looking like a team uniform.

All white shirts and jeans.

Try:
